Sustainability Spotlight

The Town of Davidson was recently recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for achieving LEED Silver certification. The Town is part of a growing number of localities to be certified using the LEED for Cities rating system. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was created by USGBC and is the world’s most widely used green building rating system. LEED for Cities enables towns, cities, and counties to measure and track outcomes that are evaluated against key metrics that include energy, water, waste, transportation, education, health, safety, prosperity, and equitability. Davidson’s legacy of thoughtful planning, intentional civic engagement, and environmental stewardship formed the foundation of its certification award.

For additional information about the LEED Silver certification, visit Town of Davidson | LEED for Cities.Plastic Free July® will be here soon! Plastic Free July® is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. Check the Town Sustainability Webpage at the end of June for details about how you can participate and be entered into a prize drawing!

Keep Up with the Climate Action Plan

Town Staff have already started making progress on Climate Action Plan (CAP) goals. The CAP webpage has been updated to reflect whether items are awaiting action, in progress, or complete.

Action item G4.1.2 is complete! The Urban Community Forestry Plan (UCFP) can be found on the Town Arborist Webpage. While this action item is considered complete, it will be an on-going initiative and UCFP progress will be tracked as it is implemented.

You can follow Climate Action Plan progress by visiting Town of Davidson | Climate Action Plan.

Stay Cool, Plant Trees

Is it hot in your home, on your street, or in your neighborhood? Have you noticed a rise in temperatures around Town? With the summer heat well on its way, staying out of direct sunlight can be integral to staying cool. But what does that mean, and how can you help?

The answer is simple, plant trees! Trees provide cover for streets, sidewalks, houses, greenways, and more all over town. These shady areas can mean up to a 10-degree difference in temperatures! Which helps to keep you cool on your morning run, afternoon bike ride, or evening stroll through one of our parks. By planting one tree in your yard, you won’t only make a difference in the temperatures, but in the community’s mental and physical health, property values, biodiversity, and much more!

For more information about trees, or questions for the Town Arborist, visit Town of Davidson | Arborist.

The Majesty of Bees

June 1st movie-goers enjoyed a screening of My Garden of a Thousand Bees. The film follows an acclaimed wildlife filmmaker who records bee species in their garden and eventually gets so close to the bees it is possible to identify individuals by sight. Following the film, a local Master Gardener discussed gardening techniques to create a pollinator-friendly yard.

Special thanks to the Davidson Lands Conservancy (DLC) for partnering with the town to host the event as part of their spring event series. For more information about DLC or their upcoming events, visit their website.

Celebrating a Home Run Season with Davidson Youth Baseball Association (DYBA)! Thank you to our partner organization for providing over 30 teams, ranging from T-ball to High School aged participants. As the sun sets on another incredible season, we can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude and pride for all DYBA does for our youth.
