With the Olympics wrapping up, have no fear – there are a lot amazing things going on in our town this weekend:

Friday

Men’s Tennis vs. N.C. Central

February 23 @ 5:00

The Davidson College Men’s Tennis team hosts N.C. Central. Weather depending, the match will take place at the new outdoor courts behind the Baker Sports Complex or inside at the Knobloch Tennis Center. Matches are free and open to the public.

 

Baseball vs. Georgetown

February 23 @ 6:00 p.m.

Davidson College – Wilson Field

The Davidson Wildcats open their season Friday night, with a matchup against Lafayette. The game is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. at Wilson Field. All games are free and open to the public.

 

The Mountaintop – LA Theatre Works

On the evening of April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside room 306 of The Lorraine Motel in Memphis. What happened inside room 306 the night before the killing is a mystery. In her internationally acclaimed play, The Mountaintop, playwright Katori Hall fantasizes what may have transpired in the overnight hours between the legendary civil rights leader and a seemingly inconsequential hotel maid. LA Theatre Works has been the foremost radio theatre company in the United States for four decades and bring their unique style to this powerful drama.

 

The Diary of Anne Frank

Davidson Community Players — In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl, who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time.

Advance tickets start at $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $12 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the website or by calling the box office at 704-892-7953.

Farmers’ Market

February 24: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Parking is available on Main Street, Town Hall Lot, Police Department Lot, and at Davidson Presbyterian Church lot at the corner of Depot & Jackson Streets. The busiest Market time is between 8:30-10:30 a.m. Get there early if you are looking for something in particular. Eggs sell out quickly!

Belk Arena – Davidson College

The Davidson Women’s Basketball team will be hosting the VCU at 2:00 p.m. in Belk Arena. Game day tickets are available at the ticket office.

Music @ St. Alban’s Concert Series Presents Duo Amabile

February 25 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

St. Alban’s Episcopal Church – 301 Caldwell Lane, Davidson

Music @ St. Alban’s Concert Series presents Duo Amabile. This Virginia-based husband wife duo, Violinist Matvey Lapin and Pianist Katja Lapin, perform Schubert, Franck, Ravel, and Part.

A meet-the-artist reception follows the concert.Tickets will be available at the door or on the website. General admission is $20; Seniors $15; Students $10; and children under 12 are free.

 

Book Discussion – Waking Up White, by Debbie Irving

Davidson College Presbyterian Church – Jetton Hall [Corner of Main St. & Concord Rd.]

will be hosting the second of a 4-part study of the book, Waking Up White. The discussion will be led by Scott Kenefake, Interim Minister. The final discussions in this series will be held on March 4 & 11. [The class is also being offered on February 24; March 3 & 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the Marshall Room at the Pines.]

 

Prayer at the Close of Day

Davidson United Methodist Church Chapel

February 25 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Prayer at the Close of Day is a service with the combined musical leadership from Davidson College Presbyterian (DCPC) and Davidson United Methodist Church (DUMC): It is in the traditions of Compline and Taizé. Musicians from both churches will lead the service with reflective, unaccompanied music. There will be candlelight, prayers, scripture,
congregational Taizé songs, and periods of silence.
