Organ at Davidson Presents Bach Birthday Bash on March 12

by | Feb 28, 2018 | Arts & Entertainment, Houses of Worship, News

The final concert of this season’s Organ at Davidson series will be on Monday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Davidson College Presbyterian Church and will showcase the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, a March tradition since the series began. The program is entitled “Arnstadt to Leipzig:  Bach’s Organ Music from Start to Finish.” Organists Jane D. Cain and Michael Rowland will share performing duties.

Who was Johann Sebastian Bach?  A spiritual giant, or a temperamental and stubborn Court musician? A famous organist and improviser, or a reluctant teacher at a boys’ school? An innovator, or a reactionary? Or neither? This program will trace Bach’s life story and his philosophy as we follow his organ compositions from earliest youth through old age. Through narration and a bit of reader’s theater, the audience will appreciate the scope of Bach’s life and his organ music.

Jane Cain is the Director of Music and organist at Davidson College Presbyterian Church and the founder of the Organ at Davidson series. Michael Rowland, well known in Davidson, was Associate Director of Music at the church, as well as Artist Associate at Davidson College.

All programs are on Monday nights and are free (with donations encouraged), followed by a Friends of the Organ meet-the-artist reception immediately after the performance.
