ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
April is for Arts, 2018
When I moved to Davidson ten years ago, I was beyond thrilled to find that this amazing little town dedicated an entire month to celebrating the arts! An artist, myself, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I had only been living in town a month when I learned of this and had to know every detail, so I could experience this small-town festivity to the fullest. And I was certainly not disappointed.
When we drove into town on the evening of the gallery crawl, my husband and I were greeted by the ringing bell of a trolley, of which we quickly took advantage, so we would not miss a site on the route. We hopped off at every stop and enjoyed meeting a plethora of artists, being entertained by live music, and treated to refreshments in nearly every shop. We were so impressed by the number of businesses that participated and felt welcomed by the hospitality, smiles, warm cookies, and amazing artwork. We left town that night thrilled at all Davidson had done to create such a community that supported art, handcrafts, and music.
Now, all these years later, I still look forward to this month. To some people, April means spring showers. To me, April is for Arts! It’s a time to meet and appreciate fine art, handcrafts, music, and all things handmade – a time when Davidson businesses transform into art galleries for one Friday night a year – a time when our beloved ‘Green’ plays honorary home to over 50 artists for two fabulous days of shopping, being inspired, and dancing to live music.
Art on the Green is the perfect place to find something for just about anyone. Whether you are looking to spend $5.00 or $500.00, you will not be disappointed in the variety and quality of the art and handcrafts on display. I believe you’ll be as thrilled as I am every year to see returning artists and check out all they have been working on since the previous year, but also to see new artists and the additional variety and beauty they bring to this wonderful show of ours. Your kiddos will love making crafts with a few of the artists, as well!
April is for Arts Gallery Crawl will be held Friday night, April 20 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Come to town early (or hop on the trolley if you are lucky enough to have it come to your neighborhood) and grab a bite to eat at one of our wonderful restaurants. Then hit every trolley stop on the crawl for the full experience. Come on back for Art on the Green, which will open for business April 21, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 22, noon-4:00 p.m. But don’t go home just at 4:00. Our much-loved Concerts on the Green kicks off Sunday night, April 22 at 6:00, showcasing the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble.
I’d call that a perfect way to cap off an artfully perfect weekend!
