Nortier’s Hat Trick Powers Davidson Field Hockey over LIU-Brooklyn
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson senior Leigha Nortier netted a second half hat trick as field hockey downed LIU Brooklyn in non-conference action at Belk Turf Field Sunday, 5-2.
With the win Davidson improves to 2-2, while with the loss the Blackbirds fall to 0-4.
Up 2-1 after LIU Brooklyn cut the deficit in half to open the second frame, Nortier quickly went to work, netting three goals in under nine minutes to push Davidson’s advantage out to 5-1 with 10 minutes to play in the game.
Nortier was not alone in the action as all three goals featured assists. Freshman Valerie Hajek, Caitlyn Gund and Sydney McKenna fed Nortier on three straight scoring strikes.
Nortier ended with a seven-point day as the Hershey, Pa., native dished an assist on classmate Kristin Kisa’s second goal of the afternoon. Kisa put the ‘Cats on the board first with a clean shot from the center circle in the first 10 minutes of play and added another from Nortier to give the ‘Cats a 2-0 cushion at the break.
Davidson outshot the Blackbirds 20-8 and 14-5 on cage. Senior Bean Rodriguez picked up the win in her first start of the season, turning away two LIU Brooklyn shots. Senior Emily Morgan stepped in and picked up the first defensive save of the season for the ‘Cats to prevent an early equalizer from LIU Brooklyn.
Davidson returns to action Friday, Sep. 7 when Appalachian State some to Belk Turf Field. Game-time is slated for 7 p.m.
