VISUAL TRUMPERY: How to fight against fake data and visualizations —from the left and from the right

September 7 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The Hurt Hub – 210 Delburg Street

A talk by Alberto Cairo who has two decades of experience as an info-graphics and data visualization journalist and designer. The English word “trumpery” means worthless nonsense, something that is showy and deceitful at the same time. Trumpery can occur in text, verbally, or visually. This non-partisan talk focuses on the visual, examining misleading charts, graphs, and data maps designed by individuals and organizations from all over the political spectrum. Cairo will use these examples to equip you with a solid understanding of “graphicacy,” the word he uses to refer to visual literacy. He believes a literate, numerate, and graphicate citizenry is the best antidote for a world where trumpery runs rampant.

Patrice Gopo – Reading + Signing

September 8 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Author Patrice Gopo grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, the child of Jamaican immigrants who had little experience being black in America. In her memoir, All the Colors We Will See, Patrice Gopo seamlessly moves across borders of space and time to create vivid portraits of how the reality of being different affects her quest to belong. In this poetic and often courageous weaving of writings, Patrice examines the complexities of identity in our turbulent yet hopeful time of intersecting heritages. As she digs beneath the layers of immigration questions and race relations, Patrice also turns her voice to themes such as marriage and divorce, the societal beauty standards we hold, and the intricacies of living out our faith.
