Ready, Set, Weekend in Davidson: Sept. 28 – Oct. 1

Runners head up South Street at the start of a previous Run For Green. This year’s Run For Green was delayed by Hurricane Florence, and will be held on Saturday, September 29.

 

Friday

Davidson Men’s Tennis Invitational

September 28 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

This will be the 12th straight year the Wildcats will host their own invitational. Joining them at the invitational this weekend will be USC-Upstate, Queens from just down the road in Charlotte and Appalachian State. Play begins Friday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. and runs through the weekend finishing up on Sunday. The invite itself will be a “flighted” individual format with eight singles flights and four doubles flights.

The matches will be held on the hard courts behind the Baker Sports Complex.

Chicago’s legendary sketch and improv comedy theater returns to Davidson with this irreverent look at the current state of America. This topical new show features political satire made famous by Second City alums like Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, and Keegan Michael Key, as well as brand new scenes, songs, and improv straight out of their sold out shows in Chicago, Toronto, and Los Angeles.

Tickets are free for Davidson students, $17 for Faculty/Staff/Seniors, and $22 for Public.

The Davidson Farmer’s Market, Inc. (DFM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Davidson, North Carolina. This is the 10th year of the Davidson Farmers’ Market. The Davidson Farmer’s Market is a producer-only, year-round Market featuring more than 35 farmers and local producers from within a 100-mile radius. The Market is a lively gathering place for meeting friends and for learning about food, agriculture and nutrition. Growers and producers are on hand to answer your questions, from “How was this grown?” to questions about how to prepare and preserve all types of foods. We are located next to the Davidson Town Hall between Main & Jackson Streets. Parking is available on Main Street, Town Hall Lot, Police Department Lot, and at Davidson Presbyterian Church lot at the corner of Depot & Jackson Streets.

 

Rounding 50, Running 50, Raising 50

Town Green

Robert Alexander, Associate Pastor of Davidson College Presbyterian Church, just turned 50 years old and is celebrating his birthday by running a 50-miler and raising $50,000 to support Lily Pad Haven, a Charlotte-based nonprofit working to help survivors of human trafficking transition back into society. On Saturday, September 29 at 8:00 a.m., Alexander will begin running a five-mile loop around Davidson (10 times) that starts and ends on the Davidson Town Green. All are welcome to celebrate the completion of 10 laps and 50 miles with food, drinks and music starting around 6:00 p.m. on the Town Green.

Experience the unique character of the contrabass as performed by Kurt Reicken along with other members of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra including Sam Sparrow on clarinet, Andrew Fierova on horn, Joshua Hood on bassoon, Ben Geller on viola, Joseph Meyer on violin, and Alan Black on cello. Pieces on the program include Dvořák’s String Quintet No. 2, Rossini’s Duo for Cello and Bass, and a fascinating chamber version of Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks. There will be a reception after the concert sponsored by Ruth and Richard Ault.

Davidson Community Players to Hold Auditions for Boos and Brews

Ready to try something new? Do you want to test the “acting” waters without committing to a full-length play? Want to have fun? If so, come out to audition for Davidson Community Players’ second annual 10-minute-play festival, Boos and Brews. Auditions will take place on Sunday, September 30 at 7 p.m. and Monday, October 1 at 7 p.m. DCP needs approximately 25 actors to fill out the casts for eight original, 10-minute-plays written by community playwrights. These plays all have one major theme in common—ghoulish fun!

Red Cross Blood Drive

Due to the recent hurricane, the need for blood is even greater as many blood drives had to be cancelled and there were several injuries requiring blood transfusions. The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime.
