Women’s Tennis Defeats Queens

DAVIDSON, N.C.  — The Davidson women’s tennis team remained perfect in the early goings of the 2019 season by earning a pair of 7-0 sweeps of visiting Queens Saturday inside the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center.

Davidson, which won its third straight home opener, ran its record to 4-0 on the season, picking up its second and third shutout wins, respectively.

The day saw three Wildcats go a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles, while two others had three combined wins. The trio of Megan Scholvinck (No. 1- 6-3, 6-0 & No. 2- 6-2, 6-0), Alexandra Abele (No. 2- 6-1, 6-0 & No. 1- 6-2, 6-4) and Elizabeth Truluck (No. 5- 6-0, 6-1 & No. 4- 6-0, 6-2) all earned two singles wins, while Scholvinck and Truluck remained perfect on the season (4-0) with doubles wins of 6-4 and 6-3 at No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively.

Samantha Armas pushed her personal-best winning streak to nine in a row and moved to 4-0 on the season in singles with wins of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and 5 positions. The junior also teamed up with Abele at No. 2 doubles in the first match of the day to score a 6-3 win.

The other ‘Cat to earn three wins on the day was Gabrielle Centenari. The senior netted 7-6, 6-1 and 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-3) wins in singles play, while picking up her first doubles win of the year with Nicole Krykanov at No. 3 in a 6-0 decision. Krykanov’s win was the first of her collegiate career.

Freshman Mira Gladstone won her second singles match on the young season with a strong 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 6 in the first match of the day. Filling in at No. 6 in the second match was Alyssa Hahn and she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory for her first win of the year.

Gladstone also won a doubles match with Abele, a 6-0 triumph at No. 3 to help the Wildcats seal up the doubles point in the second match.

Davidson plays its first Atlantic 10 opponent next weekend, traveling to VCU, Feb. 3, for an 11 a.m. match.
