Atherton Joins Ada Jenkins Team

Melissa Atherton

The Ada Jenkins Center is pleased to welcome Melissa Atherton our new Development Assistant. Melissa earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Secondary Education from the University of Florida. She completed her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Barry University.

Melissa has served children in need throughout her career as a social worker. She provided individual, family and group therapy for children in the foster care system. She advocated for abused and neglected children as a CASA and Guardian ad Litem volunteer. Melissa assisted children with psycho-social needs as a clinical social worker at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. She also provided crisis assistance for immigrant families in Miami as an Americorps social work intern. She lived in a tent for three years and led 35-day wilderness courses for adjudicated youth as an Outward Bound instructor in Florida and Maine.

Melissa lives with her husband and two sons in Davidson. She volunteers at Lydia’s Loft, Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen, SwimMAC Carolina and Hough High School. Melissa is excited to join the development team at Ada Jenkins Center. Welcome Melissa!
