Dayton Shoots Past Davidson in Women’s Basketball A10 Quarterfinals

This team of Wildcats gave their fans a terrific season of basketball.

 

PITTSBURGH, Pa.  — Dayton shot a game-high 54.2 percent and had two 20-point scorers as Davidson fell 84-67 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship Saturday afternoon inside the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Davidson, making its first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals, saw its record fall to 17-14. Dayton (17-12) advances to play top seed VCU Saturday at 11 a.m. in the semifinals.

The Flyers hit 32-of-59 shots from the floor, including 8-of-18 from behind the arc, and went 12-for-14 at the charity stripe. Jayla Saife led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 3-for-3 from three-land, and Lauren Cannatelli had 20 on 6-of-8 shooting with a 3-for-5 showing on threes.

In addition to the shooting performance, Dayton used a 10-0 run in the second quarter to push its lead into double digits and the ‘Cats were never able to get any closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Justine Lyon scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while Sarah Donovan had 16 points and eight rebounds. Cassidy Gould netted 14 points to round out Davidson’s trio of double-figure scorers.

Lyon hit a three-ball with 7:13 to go in the third quarter to make it 47-36, but the Flyers answered back by scoring 13 of the next 20 points to go up 60-43 and 1:33 left in the quarter.

Davidson tried to keep pace with Dayton’s shooting, hitting 46.3 percent from the field (25-of-54). It also turned 15 Dayton turnovers into a game-high 19 points.

Despite hitting 8-of-15 field goals in the first quarter, Davidson saw Dayton shoot out to a 25-16 lead at the end of the quarter on 10-of-14 shooting. Cannatelli and Scaife (7) scored 10 of the Flyers final 12 points in the quarter.

The trend continued into the second quarter when Dayton opened on a 10-0 run to go up 35-16. A Donovan jumper stopped a five-minute scoring drought for the Wildcats and Lyon later scored seven points in the quarter, but Dayton held onto its lead going into the break up 45-29.

The Flyers shot 18-for-32 from the floor in the first two quarters, while Davidson was 12-for-26, but only 1-of-5 from three-land and were 4-for-9 at the charity stripe.

GAME NOTES: This was the sixth meeting all-time between both team’s women’s basketball programs dating back to when the Wildcats joined the A-10 … Davidson fell to 0-6 in the series … Lyon’s double-digit scoring game was the 20th of the season and 71st of her career … Davidson scored 32 points in the paint, but Dayton countered with 40 … Donovan’s 278 rebounds is tied for fourth-most in a single season.
