The Freedom Market

The Freedom Market, hosted by Freedom Schools at Davidson College, is an interactive experience designed for scholars to learn about the value of entrepreneurship and social business. Freedom Schools scholars will have the opportunity to actively participate in a market setting, selling products, such as self-authored books and artwork for real profit. Local organizations will sell goods, such as gently used multicultural children’s literature. There will also be a pitch competition for the SocialPreneur Lab where scholars will have the opportunity to pitch their web-based app ideas for social change. “A Comedy of Tenors”

One hotel suite, four tenors, two wives, three girlfriends, and a soccer stadium filled with screaming fans. What could possibly go wrong? It’s 1930s Paris and the stage is set for the concert of the century – as long as producer Henry Saunders can keep Italian superstar Tito Merelli and his hot-blooded wife, Maria, from causing runaway chaos. Prepare for an uproarious ride, full of mistaken identities, bedroom hijinks, and madcap delight.

The Davidson Farmer’s Market, Inc. (DFM) is back this week. DFM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Davidson, North Carolina. This is the 10th year of the Davidson Farmers’ Market. The Davidson Farmer’s Market is a producer-only, year-round Market featuring more than 35 farmers and local producers from within a 100-mile radius. The Market is a lively gathering place for meeting friends and for learning about food, agriculture and nutrition. Growers and producers are on hand to answer your questions, from “How was this grown?” to questions about how to prepare and preserve all types of foods. We are located next to the Davidson Town Hall between Main & Jackson Streets. Parking is available on Main Street, Town Hall Lot, Police Department Lot, and at Davidson Presbyterian Church lot at the corner of Depot & Jackson Streets.

Meet up at the Davidson Town Green at 9:00 a.m.  Gut on Fire, Brain on Fire, Hormones on Fire

Dr. Lexi (Lain) is joining “Walk with a Doc” to discuss how, when the gut is inflamed, the brain is also inflamed. She will tie in how hormones can be directly correlated with this connection, too, because “it’s all related.” Dr. Lexi will answer the question as to why you can’t really address just one thing and why it’s so important to treat the person as a whole. Hope to see you there! Dr. Lexi will present for 20 minutes and you can walk, ask her questions, or meet some new like-minded people. Wear your walking shoes and bring a bottle of water because it’s hot out there! We will have cold filtered water, as well as bottled water and fresh bananas, oranges, and apples. Join us as we Educate, Exercise, and Empower each other one step at a time. See you Saturday.

Heck YA! Book Fest

Want to meet some of the newest and most inspiring writers of young adult fiction? Heck YA! We thought so. Main Street Books presents Heck YA! a book festival for young readers. Join 17 authors of middle grade and young adult fiction for an afternoon of campy literary delight in Davidson, NC. Readers begin the afternoon with a camp-style assembly with keynote from author Gillian McDunn. Following the opening assembly, readers then attend three 50-minute author panels for lively discussions on themes and writing. The afternoon concludes with a closing ceremony and sign-around during which all 17 authors will be available to sign copies of books purchased from Main Street Books. Throughout the afternoon, attendees will be eligible to win book and swag giveaways. We invite readers who are rising fifth graders and older to attend. Heck YA! is free, but attendees must be pre-registered..

Davidson Film Club Presents “The Captain”

The DFC Board is happy to announce that subscriptions are now open for our Fourteenth Series of award-winning, critically acclaimed international fiction films at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson. The new series includes the five outstanding films, and the feature for July is on Saturday, July 27 at 7:00 p.m. “The Captain” is directed by Robert Schwentke (Germany, 2017, 1h58). Discussion of each of these films will be led, as always, by persons with specialized expertise in the area of the film being screened. The DFC website has been updated and includes this schedule and short descriptions of all the films. Just go to our website and click on “Film Descriptions.” Please remember that we are a non-profit, tax-exempt organization run by unpaid volunteers. Every penny of your subscription goes toward the direct expenses of running your Film Club. $7 per film for members, the lowest cost per film in the area. The walk-in ticket price will remain at $9.
