Making Sense of Central American Migration Presentation
The Davidson College Presbyterian Church Social Justice Committee will be hosting a presentation entitled: “Making Sense of Central American Migration.” Davidson College Associate Professor of Anthropology and Chair of Latin American Studies Rev. Dr. Matt Sampson will give the presentation on August 25th at 5:30 in the DCPC Parlor.
As Sampson states, “Contemporary migration from Central America is a complex humanitarian issue that transcends the narrow political discourse driving the policy initiatives of the current administration in the White House. Based in part on the June visit of a Presbyterian Church – USA (PCUSA) study team to Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, this presentation considers the “push” factors driving migration from Central America. These factors are as varied as violence, development economics, and climate change.”
The study team is commissioned to make a report to next year’s PCUSA General Assembly in Baltimore, and the discussion will also consider the current approach to detention and applications for asylum on the Mexico-US border. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own questions.
