Each year, the Van Every/Smith Galleries present an exhibition that highlights the work of one or more studio art faculty. This year, the Van Every Gallery presents digital works including games, prints, and animations by art team Joelle Dietrick and Owen Mundy. Having collaborated since 2006 after they met at the University of California, San Diego, their Davidson College exhibition focused on their artworks from the last five years. At the center of the exhibition is The Speed of Thinking, their mobile game that playfully connects global trade to global warming.

Simultaneously, the Galleries will exhibit the work of Los Angeles-based artist Harold Mendez in the Smith Gallery. Mendez (b. 1977 Chicago, IL.) lives and works between Los Angeles, CA and Chicago, IL. Mendez received an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2007, BA from Columbia College Chicago in 2000, and attended the University of Science and Technology, School of Art and Design in Ghana, West Africa in 1999. His work has been widely exhibited in solo exhibitions at venues such as PATRON, Chicago IL; Moody Center for the Arts, Rice University, Houston, TX; and Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, University of Chicago, Chicago, IL. His work has also been included in many group exhibitions including Being, edition of New Photography, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Whitney Biennial 2017, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York NY; and at LAXART, Los Angeles, CA; Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY; The Drawing Center, New York, NY; and Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA, among others. Mendez has been honored with many awards, grants, and residencies including the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation’s Rauschenberg Residency Fellowship, Captiva, FL; Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, New York, NY; Illinois Arts Council Artist Fellowship; Headlands Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA; Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and the CORE Program, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Houston, TX. Mendez’s works can be found in numerous permanent public collections including JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, New York, NY; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; The Studio Museum in Harlem, NYC, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL, and the Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago, IL.
