Wildcat Golf Continues Impressive Play, Runner-Up at Pinehurst
PINEHURST, N.C. – Alex Ross continued his stellar play as the junior carded an even-par 71 Sunday to finish tied for second, while Davidson also came home runner-up with a 54-hole total of 898 (298-303-297) at the 2020 Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
The three-day event was played on the Par 71, 6,937-yard Pinehurst No. 8 layout.
For Ross, it was his sixth Top-5 finish in seven starts this season with his lone outside coming from a withdrawal due to injury. The 2018 A-10 Rookie of the Year and 2019 All-Conference performer made the turn in 38 before recording four birdies on his inward nine to match the day’s lowest total.
As for the Wildcats, it was their second runner-up this spring and third Top-5 in as many starts.
Sophomore Dean Naime (222 | +9) picked up where he left off yesterday with a final-round 74 to finish eighth out of 81 competitors.
Davidson’s Brian Garrett bounced back with a 75 to place tied for 21st, just two strokes ahead of teammate Clayton Tribus (231 | T-32nd).
Also, in the Davidson starting lineup was Viraj Garewal (235 | T-47th), while Cole Walter (234 | T-43rd), Ethan Hall (236 | T-49th), Will Simmons (241 | T-61) and Michael Freeman (255 | 76th) competed as individuals.
Of the foursome, Walter was the low Wildcat this afternoon matching his personal best with a 75.
In addition to Elon leading wire-to-wire to claim the team title by 20 strokes, the Phoenix’s Graham Hutchinson led from start to finish in capturing the individual crown with a total of 213 (E).
