Davidson’s Van Every/Smith Galleries – Art in Your Inbox

Romare Bearden – Art history major Helen Sturm ’20 explores this collage by Romare Bearden in this week’s Seen from Storage blog post. Click the photo to read! Side note: the photostat produced from our original collage was recently included in an exhibition at the Guggenheim, curated by six artists, including Julie Mehretu. Mehretu selected this work along with several others from the Guggenheim’s collection that reflect “how trauma, displacement, and anxiety in the decades after World War II found expression across cultural boundaries and in a wide range of art.”

Makayla Binter ’20 – This week, senior studio art major Makayla Binter gives us a look into her art making process. She would have presented her capstone exhibition in the Smith gallery this spring, if not for the pandemic. Despite the disappointment, Makayla continues to make art. Plus, she’s generally just an amazing human! After you click here to get an introduction to her work, follow along with her studio at @artsandmarks.

Elizabeth Young ’20 – Meet long-time gallery intern Elizabeth Young! We will miss her so much next year. Click here to learn more her, including her favorite memory while interning at the Galleries throughout her time at Davidson College.

College Art Collection – Isabelle Sakelaris ’19 interviewed President Carol Quillen and Dr. George McLendon about the works on display in their home, both from their personal collection and from the College’s permanent art collection. Learn more at the link.

Campus Art Tour – Click here to access an audio tour of Davidson College public sculptures. Also, read this blog by Elizabeth Young ’20 about Spirit Waves Fountain by Jesús Moroles.

 Yinka Shonibare Talk

Click here view a conversation between Yinka Shonibare CBE and Davidson College’s President, Carol Quillen. The talk took place on campus in 2018 in conjunction with our exhibition The American Library, as well as our acquisition of Wind Sculpture (SG) I, a gift of Patricia A. Rodgers in memory of her husband B.D. Rodgers Jr.

WDAV Rodin Favorites

Back in February, Davidson’s Classical Public Radio posted an interesting series of interpretations based on our recent exhibition, Auguste Rodin: Truth Form Life. Several hosts and directors at WDAV chose pieces of classical music that best fit their personal interpretation of each sculpture, leading to an interesting crossroads of artistic and musical achievements.
