Town Memorial Day Proclamation
PROCLAMATION
Memorial Day 2020
WHEREAS, the Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on May 25, 2020;
WHEREAS, this year is different. We are a world, a nation, a state, and a town in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic;
WHEREAS, with the lifting of some of the restrictions that have impacted our lives for the past two months coincides with Memorial Day weekend, we cannot – we must not – lose sight of what this holiday means to our Nation and our Town;
WHEREAS, throughout history the sons and daughters of this town and the students and alumni of Davidson College heeded the call to service in the armed forces of the United States – at times of peace and war;
WHEREAS, most of the families in our town welcomed their loved ones home at the end of their military service, some did not;
WHEREAS, the three cemeteries in our town serve as the final resting place for many of our fallen heroes who did not return from battles on far-away lands;
WHEREAS, the War Memorial on the Davidson College campus honors students and alumni who gave their lives in our Nation’s conflicts from World War I to Iraq and Afghanistan;
WHEREAS, on May 24th, a small group of Davidson citizens will place flags on the graves of these fallen heroes as well as the graves of the veterans who served our Nation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Board of Commissioners of the Town of Davidson, do hereby declare that May 25, 2020 shall be observed as Memorial Day 2020 in the Town of Davidson. We encourage citizens of Davidson to visit our local cemeteries and the Davidson College War Memorial to pay respects to those who gave the last full measure of devotion for the freedoms we cherish each and every day.
