WDAV Launches Podcast ‘Power Play’ to Explore the Points of Intersection Between Power and Music
June 18, 2020 | DAVIDSON & CHARLOTTE, NC – 89.9 WDAV announced today, the release of a new podcast series titled Power Play.

On Power Play, co-hosts Alexander Karbo and Ross Hickman explore stories about the power of music, the music of the powerful, music as a means to power, and what happens when music and power go head to head.

“Music is an art form not everyone would immediately connect to broader systems of power,” says Hickman. “Music is indeed political, and Power Play demonstrates just how central culture is to any sort of understanding of politics and power.”

“Power Play is driven by finding and telling interesting stories. It gives listeners the opportunity to discover and learn about topics they wouldn’t normally be exposed to,” adds Karbo. “Through this series, we are contributing to the current conversations about race, power, privilege, and politics in our nation and globally.”

Season 1 is comprised of six episodes, released bi-weekly, beginning with Calypso: Race, Land, and Politics through Journalistic Music. This episode examines the political messages of Calypso music from Trinidad & Tobago. The popular genre has perhaps the most vivid and explicitly political words of the series. Calypsonians engage in history and identity with compelling frankness, fusing music, and journalism to speak truth to power.

Power Play is available for download at Google PodcastsApple Podcasts, and Spotify. Episodes are also available on demand at WDAV’s website, wdav.org, and on TuneIn.
Alexander Karbo (call him Karbo!) is the creator, editor, and co-host of Power Play. He is an alumnus of Davidson College, where he double-majored in Physics and Philosophy. He has an avid interest in stories of all kinds, as well as a passion for podcasting and public radio. Karbo can be spotted in his hometown of Seattle, Washington, wherever dogs are found.
Power Play co-host Ross Hickman is a student at Davidson College, majoring in History and Gender & Sexuality Studies. He has worked with WDAV writing and co-hosting podcasts and putting together blog posts for the station’s blog Of Note. Upon graduating, Hickman plans to pursue a career in journalism, law, and intersectional advocacy for queer and trans rights.
Power Play is produced by Tamberly Ferguson, Director of Digital Media and Strategy at WDAV Classical Public Radio. Josh Sacco is the audio engineer.
