This Week at the Farmers Market: September 12

by | Sep 10, 2020 | Davidson Farmers Market, Local, News, Nonprofits

This week’s map for DFM.

Hello DFM Shoppers,

One of the best things about fall is apple season! As a baker and pastry chef, I love apple season because apples are so versatile in baking and cooking. You can do so much more than just an apple pie or apple crisp (bourbon apple bread pudding, please!); plus apples make outstanding savory dishes like a Mostarda for pork, turkey, and cheese plates.

This year, we’re working to bring you even more apples at the market than years past. We want to bring you all your favorite varieties plus new types that you might not have tried before. Selling apples at the market has been one of DFM’s top fundraisers. Funds from apple sales go directly to market operations, programs, and educational events. New this year are apples sales supporting DFM’s efforts to expand our list of vendors and invite more vendors with a variety of new selections to the market that we have wanted to offer for a long time.

Starting this weekend, DFM will have our apple tent in the market selling apples by the bag. This week’s selections are gala, honeycrisp, and ginger gold (prices vary). I will be at the tent helping you pick the best apples for your needs and as a bonus I will be more than happy to answer any baking or cooking questions you might have regarding apples 🙂 I mean, theres nothing worse than buying the wrong apple for a slab apple pie or apple butter.

We will accept cash or credit card, but we strongly encourage card payment to minimize contact. Additionally, we are not able to offer purchasing apples individually or shoppers selecting their own apples. But, I am more than happy to assist you while shopping.

If you are unable to attend the market or don’t need apples but want to support DFM, you can make a contribution to DFM and our continued efforts by donating here.

I look forward to seeing you all at the market this weekend and talking apples!

Happy eating,

Justin

Recipe Box: Apple Crisp Cups

Apples are here! Make these quick and easy apple treats with the family for snacks throughout the week.

Apple Crisp Cups
Yields 4 dozen

Ingredients
3 large crisp apples, peeled, cored, and chopped*
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups rolled oats
1 ½ cups light brown sugar
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 ½ cups butter

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 4 12-cup mini-muffin tins.
  2. Mix apples, water, white sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon together in a saucepan, and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Simmer until apples are partially cooked, about 5 minutes; remove from heat.
  3. Combine flour, oats, brown sugar, remaining cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl; cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Place a heaping tablespoon of the crust mixture into a mini muffin cup, and press it into the cup so that it covers the bottom and pushes up the sides of the cup. Make the crust go all the way to the top of the little muffin cup, and patch any holes with more crust mixture. There will be crust mixture left over. Place about 2 teaspoons of apple filling in the crust. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of the remaining crust mixture on the filling.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Best served warm.
