This Week at Davidson Farmers Market: Sept. 19

by | Sep 17, 2020 | Davidson Farmers Market, News, Nonprofits

Bring your wagons and load up at the Davidson Farmers Market.

Hello DFM Shoppers,

One of many benefits of eating local food is becoming more in tune with the rhythms of seasons.  We savor the last tomatoes and melons of the summer as the mornings become cooler, then we greet new crops of apples and acorn squash like old friends returned after some time away.

Being on the board of the Davidson Farmers Market has its rhythms, too.  Board members serve three-year terms, renewable for a second three-year stint, and may join at any point in the year.  We have four officers – president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer – who also serve in staggered terms.  The current board has an impressive range of skills: health care, finance, catering and food service, legal, graphic design, marketing, education, and engineering.  In my time with the DFM, board members have ranged in age from early twenties to early eighties.  This diversity of perspectives and life experiences ensures vibrant approaches to everything from weekly market operations to long-term strategic planning.

Current board members are Julie Alexander (vice president), Brooke Basinger, Jamie Boraks, Matt Davis, Carol Lackey (secretary), Michael McFadden, Tracey Ratté, Betsy Verhey, Chuck Warren (treasurer), and me.  We are a working board – you’ll see every one of us in a Green Team volunteer t-shirt working a shift at the market.  We also liaise with the Town of Davidson, plan and manage the budget, make sure the market grounds and equipment are in good working order, reach out to other local non-profit organizations, approve vendors, and set market policy.  We support our amazing DFM staff members Justin Burke, Market Director, and Courtney Spear, Market Coordinator.

In return, we learn just how much effort goes into running the weekly markets and keeping the DFM solvent and thriving.  We get to know our vendors, who work long hours to bring their products to the market, and whose combined knowledge of local food production and artisanal talents make the DFM one of the very best markets in the state.  We also have a lot of fun along the way!

We are always looking for new board members, so if you have talents and time to share, let us know.  Any one of us would be glad to tell you more about the DFM Board!

Happy eating,

Annie Merrill

DFM Board President

Recipe Box: Skillet Green Beans

Green beans will be around until frost. Here is a simple and quick recipe for dinner this week.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil*

½ teaspoon red pepper flake, or to taste

1.5 pounds green beans, trimmed**

2 cloves garlic, minced***

½ teaspoon coarse kosher salt

2 tablespoons water

Directions

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add red pepper flake and stir to coat the pepper in the oil. Add green beans and cook, stirring often until the beans are blistering and browning in areas, 5 to 7 minutes.

Add garlic and salt and cook, stirring constantly until the garlic is fragrant and browning, about 30 seconds.

Add water and immediately cover. Cook covered until the beans are bright green and crisp tender, 1 to 2 minutes. Serve immediately.
