You Did Not Hear
You Did Not Hear
(Reflections of Mary as she holds her new born)
You did not hear
his cold words,
“No room”
Sheltered you were
in the warmth
of my cradling love
Now I wrap you tightly
in bindings to
keep you from harm
but can I really
do so
O child from beyond?
What other rejecting words
will you hear?
Shepherds tell of
voices in the night
sending them to
kneel before you
Your eyes almost speak
that you hear
those same voices-
a knowing gaze
that comes from
the one who sent you
to me
You will need to hear
those words of welcome
for I fear the
other voices
that will not understand
you and your ways
But for now hear only
my soft song for you,
“Sweet child of light
dream of love this night
For now you are only mine
In your eyes stars do shine
Share you I will one day
For now sleep quietly
in the hay”
