Davidson Housing Coalition breaks a record with 2020 luminaria event

Davidson was aglow on December 12, 2020, to celebrate the annual Davidson Housing Coalition (DHC) community celebration, Holidays For Hope and Housing—a luminaria lighting that supports affordable housing in our community.

DHC is proud to announce that more than 1,000 donors and sponsors set a record, raising over $111,000 to help ensure that critical housing services in our town will continue, especially protection for renters during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

Holidays For Hope and Housing began 20 years ago in the McConnell neighborhood as a way to celebrate the holidays and support our neighbors who are most in need. This year was record-breaking, with more than 12,000 luminarias transformed our town’s sidewalks into flickering paths of holiday warmth and light on mild winter’s night. Families in Davidson, Cornelius, and Mooresville participated in this event, helping those who are experiencing housing instability or homelessness.

DHC is profoundly grateful for such a strong showing of community support during what has been a difficult year for everyone. DHC is thankful to all who opened their hearts to those who need it most in the community, especially the neighborhood volunteers who coordinated and delivered not only luminaria kits, but also much needed holiday cheer.

Davidson Housing Coalition is a nonprofit that serves the community with the belief that everyone should have access to decent, affordable housing and the resources to achieve economic self-sufficiency. DHC’s mission is to work with the larger community to preserve and create affordable housing options, and to prepare families and individuals for financial stability and homeownership.

In addition to managing more than 60 affordable housing units in Davidson, DHC provides homebuyer education, financial literacy counseling, Care3 (a job search assistance program for the unemployed and under-employed), HAMMERS (a home emergency-repair program serving the greater Lake Norman area), and Coordinated Entry for those experiencing homelessness in North Mecklenburg County.

A special thank you to our sponsors, Metrolina, 4Imprint, Baybridge Management, Carrburritos, Copeland Richards, Total Bond Veterinary Hospitals, JCB Urban, Saussy Burbank, C. DeWitt Foard, Flat Creek Construction, Wade Associates, and Davidson Wine Company.
