Women’s Tennis Drops Season Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women’s tennis team fell to East Tennessee State this afternoon, dropping the match 7-0 to the Bucs in the Wildcats’ 2020-21 season opener.

The ‘Cats dropped the doubles point to ETSU, but Mira Gladstone and Elizabeth Truluck picked up a win on the No. 2 doubles court, downing the Bucs 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker.

Davidson was swept across the singles matches, but redshirt-junior Nicole Krykanov forced a third set split (6-4, 0-6, 3-6) in just her second career appearance for the Wildcats. Krykanov competed from the No. 2 singles court, while freshmen Ava Ignatowich and Charlotte James made their college tennis debuts this afternoon, from the No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Josie Schaffer battled from the top singles court, pushing ETSU’s Laylo Bakhodirova to 6-4, 6-3 decisions.

The Wildcats dropped to 0-1 on the season, while the Bucs improved to 1-2, as Davidson will return to the court next Saturday, Jan. 30 at 12 p.m. to take on Presbyterian College. The match will be played from inside the Knobloch Tennis Center.
