Note: a reminder from Davidson Athletics – no fans are permitted at home games. Only invited family and friends of scholar-athletes listed on a guest list are permitted, even at outdoor venues. Please look for various ways to watch sporting events online.

Guest Lecture Series: Dr. Debra Hawhee

The Deliberative Citizenship Initiative and Writing Program of Davidson College invite the public to participate in online guest lecture series March 8-11 with Debra Hawhee of Penn State University. Registration is free and open on Eventbrite. Her keynote address on Monday, March 8, at 7 pm is titled “Imagining Our Shared Future: Rhetoric, Deliberation, and Democratic Life.” In it she will present deliberation as an art of imagining shared futures together. She infuses her approach to deliberation with insights drawn from humanities and the arts. Her approach emphasizes imagination, listening, and attention to dispositions.

The Deliberative Citizenship Initiative and Writing Program of Davidson College invite the public to participate in online guest lecture series March 8-11 with Debra Hawhee of Penn State University. Registration is free and open on Eventbrite. Her talk on Wednesday, March 10, at 7:30 pm, is titled “The Original Scholar-Athlete: Athletics and Rhetoric in Ancient Greece. In it Professor Hawhee will share the early connections between athletic and rhetorical education. The gymnasium in ancient Athens served as the training ground for wrestlers and boxers as well as for orators and statemen.

The Deliberative Citizenship Initiative and Writing Program of Davidson College invite the public to participate in online guest lecture series March 8-11 with Debra Hawhee of Penn State University. Registration is free and open on Eventbrite.  On Thursday, March 11, at noon she will conclude her visit with “A Conversation with Debra Hawhee: Climate Rhetoric, Classroom Deliberation, the Bodily Arts, and More.In it she will talk about her work on rhetoric being used by young climate activists, incorporating deliberation into the Penn State curriculum, understanding the linkages between the bodily and mental arts, and more.
