Women’s Soccer Defeats Patriots in A-10 Opener
Kendall Bushick scored two goals, Hailey Braemer had two assists and Davidson topped George Mason 3-1 in women’s soccer Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
It’s the Wildcats’ first-ever win over the Patriots, and Davidson’s second straight win in an Atlantic 10 Conference opener.
“They’re a very good team,” said coach Adam Denton, whose Wildcats improved to 3-1-1. “We’re just really pleased for the players and everyone associated with the program.”
The Wildcats struck early when Hannah Casey headed in a Braemer cross from the left at the 4:04 mark of the first half. The Wildcats held the 1-0 lead the rest of the half.
“We got off to a great start,” said Denton. “It was a great early goal, a great through-ball from Hailey and a wonderful header by Hannah. Wonderful goal.”
The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute when Braemer again crossed from the left. This time, she found Bushick, who buried a shot low right. Davidson stayed in control from there, but Mason pulled to within 2-1 on a Sarah Chontosh goal in the 84th minute.
Davidson responded quickly, though, with Bushick’s second goal at the 85:18 mark. This time, Katherine Smith played the ball up the left side, and Bushick raced into box against two defenders and with Mason’s keeper retreating after a free kick. She finished top right to seal the win.
“We didn’t panic and then got the third goal and were able to finish out the game,” said Denton.
Mary Grace Bunch stopped three shots for Davidson.
