Recipients of this year’s “Main Street Grants” joined the virtual Town Board meeting on Tuesday.

Main Street Grant Awards
Economic Development Manager Kim Fleming announced the winners of the 2020 Main Street Grant Awards. The Davidson Board of Commissioners allocated $15,000 in this year’s budget to fund the Davidson Main Street Business Grant to further their strategic goal of historic preservation. The goals of the program are to provide direct financial benefit to small businesses; retain and create jobs in association with small businesses; and spur private investment in association with small businesses located in our local historic district. Members of the Historic Preservation Commission Advisory Board reviewed the applications and awarded four grants. It is remarkable that not only have our Main Street businesses continued to operate during this pandemic but that 2 new businesses, Masala Mastee and Davidson Provision Company, have opened in this last year. Both of those businesses will each receive a $5,000 grant. This is a testament to our businesses and the community that supports them!

The Village Store – Our oldest business on Main Street, The Village Store is receiving a $2,000 grant. The Village Store is the quintessential Davidson merchant, run by Megan Blackwell, and before her, Irene and Taylor Blackwell. The Village Store is so much more than just a business on Main Street. Irene and Megan are responsible for starting most of our beloved events in Davidson including Christmas in Davidson and Concerts on the Green. Megan is the one that other businesses go to for advice and she is the one that is always willing to help plan an event or post about one of her fellow businesses on social media. The Village Store is an institution. One simply can not come to Davidson without making a trip here. And now this sweet old building has new floors, fresh walls and lighting for many more generations to come and enjoy.

Masala Mastee – Masala Mastee opened on Main Street this year to the delight of many. Vishal Maakar had been looking to open an Indian restaurant in Davidson for years. Finally, when a space opened up, he jumped at the chance to bring Indian street food to Davidson, and we are so glad he did. Upfitting The Deal House for a restaurant was not without its challenges – trying to fit large modern equipment into tiny historic hallways was not an easy task. But Vishal persevered and now Main Street has a beautiful restaurant and courtyard with even better food.

Davidson Provision Company – Not to be outdone, Matt Santos, opened his new store, Davidson Provision Company, affectionately know as DavProCo right after Masala Mastee. Matt did such an amazing job of building excitement for the opening of DavProCo. Matt transformed the existing space on Main Street into a beautiful store with large storefront windows, an indoor stage and outdoor space leading out to Knox Court.

120 S. Main LLC – 120 S. Main LLC is receiving a $3,000 grant for their work in transforming 120 S. Main St. into the space that houses DavProCo and what will be the future home of TSG Residential, MVMT Pilates, and other office tenants. David Stewart and his team opened up a building that nobody knew what was inside into a beautiful dual storefront building with office space on the second floor.

We thank you all for your investment in Davidson’s Main Street and we wish you many years of happiness and success!
