ST. LOUIS — Davidson mounted a second-half scoring flurry Saturday in a 4-0 win over Saint Louis in Atlantic 10 field hockey.
The Wildcats improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the A-10, while completing the season sweep of the Billikens. Davidson won the first meeting 3-1 at home on March 13.
“Saint Louis came to play today, and things were really close in the first half,” said Davidson coach Zoe Almquist. “We made a few adjustments at halftime and refocused on what we know we do well. I was so proud to see four different goal scorers today — across a number of setups. Our back line also outlasted a lot of pressure today, and it was fun to have Cato Roell earn her first career shutout.”
After the teams played to a 0-0 tie for more than a half, Julia Smith broke through with a goal off an assist from Valerie Hajek at the 41:50 mark. The Wildcats made it 2-0 on Corynne Hammit’s goal, assisted by Amy Worscheh, 40 seconds into the fourth quarter.
A penalty corner led to the Wildcats’ third goal, a score by Anna Sharp on a setup by Caitlyn Gund. And with 3:56 to play, Hajek finished the scoring with a goal off an assist from Natalie Naticchia. Hajek is now tied with Nellie Turnage for the team lead with three goals.
The Wildcats finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots, including 7-1 in shots on goal.
