Wildcat Football Named FCS National Team of the Week by STATS Perform
(Stats Perform) – Davidson’s streak-snapping win over San Diego continues to turn heads as the Wildcats were named the STATS Perform FCS National Team of the Week and received votes for the first time in the national poll.
Davidson (4-1, 3-0 PFL) won its fourth straight game for the first time since 2006, snapping San Diego’s 39-game conference win streak, tied for the most in FCS history, taking down the Torero’s on the road 31-25.
With the win and a strong resume this season, Davidson earned 20 points in the STATS Perform FCS Poll, putting them at 27th in the country.
“It is an honor for our team and program to be recognized on a national level. How far we’ve come in such a short period of time is truly remarkable and a testament to Wildcats past and present,” said head coach Scott Abell. “We told our team before the San Diego game that ‘there is power in persistence.’ We have worked hard to be where we are today and look forward to tackling the next goal in front of us.”
Adding to the national news, senior cornerback Jaylon Bolden was named a National Defensive Player of the Week honorable mention. Bolden picked off a pass and broke up four more in a disruptive day for the cornerback.
Senior quarterback Tyler Phelps was tabbed the Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday. Phelps helped orchestrate the win, completing 10 of 15 passes for 189 and passing for three touchdowns.
The ‘Cats return to the field Saturday at Presbyterian. Kickoff from Clinton, S.C. is slated for 1 p.m.
