Town of Davidson Hires New Town Attorney

The Town of Davidson announces the hiring of Mary Ann Swan as the town’s new attorney. In this key position, Mary Ann will provide legal guidance related to all aspects of town government, including legal services assigned by the Davidson Board of Commissioners; working closing with the Davidson Town Manager as well as department heads; drafting and reviewing contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and the like; handling litigation on behalf of the town; and advising as to North Carolina General Statute compliance and local ordinances.

With extensive experience, Mary Ann comes to the Town of Davidson after most recently serving as the Corporation Counsel for Washburn County in Shell Lake, Wisconsin where she was responsible for initiating and responding to all civil lawsuits on behalf of the county as well as preparing opinions for various departments, serving the Executive Committee and Emergency Response to COVID, drafting and reviewing contracts, Memorandums of Understanding, deeds, resolutions and ordinances.

In private practice for over 20 years, Mary Ann specialized in family, criminal defense, real estate and elder law. Under Presidents George W. Bush and William Clinton, Mary Ann served on the Defense Base Closure Commission and the Assignment of Women for Combat in the Armed Services Commission where she worked with the Department of Justice and held nationwide public hearings on the subjects, ultimately making recommendations to Congress and the President.

Having earned her law degree at Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio, Mary Ann has subsequently earned state bar licenses in Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, and now, North Carolina.

Mary Ann joined the Town of Davidson team earlier this year serving as a Legal Assistant under Interim Town Attorney Steve Gambill. Town Manager Jamie Justice says, “it’s been wonderful to have Mary Ann join the team here at the town so she can start learning the ropes and begin her service to the public. We’re excited about her stepping into the role of town attorney and will welcome her wealth of experience and expertise to our community.” Mary Ann was sworn in as a North Carolina Attorney on April 1, 2021 and was appointed at the Davidson Board of Commissioners meeting on April 13, 2021.
