Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader with Colonials

by | Apr 27, 2021

The Wildcats split their Sunday doubleheader.

Davidson earned an afternoon split and avoided a series sweep with Atlantic 10 foe George Washington Sunday at Wilson Field.

After the 1-1 day, the Wildcats are now 20-17 and 4-8 in the A-10.

Game 1
George Washington scored five runs on seven hits in the second inning en route to an 8-1 victory.

Davidson’s lone hit came on a Parker Nolan single to left in the third inning. The Wildcats scored in the sixth when Trevor Candelaria reached on an infield error, allowing Alex Fedje-Johnson to score.

Game 2
A Candelaria sacrifice fly and Jake Biederman’s mound work helped deliver a 5-4 Davidson victory.

Candelaria’s bases-loaded flyout to deep left in the eighth inning scored Michael Carico and broke a 4-4 tie.

Biederman then stranded the Colonials’ potentially tying run at third when he picked off Anthony Frechette at first base to end it. Biederman finished the final 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, to earn his third win.

Nolan DeVos, the A-10’s saves leader, got his first start and delivered 4.2 innings, striking out four and allowing one earned run and three hits.

Candelaria scored on a wild pitch in the second and on Jake Wilhoit’s sacrifice fly in the fifth. Jacob Hinderleider knocked in two runs on a second-inning double to left-center.
