Resolution for Dignity and Equality in the Town of Davidson
WHEREAS, the Town of Davidson Mission Statement says our sense of community is rooted in citizens who respect each other; in racial and socioeconomic diversity; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Davidson Core Values state that citizens are the heart of Davidson, so town government will treat all people fairly, with courtesy and respect; and
WHEREAS, a Strategic Plan Goal of Equity and Inclusion states we work together to create a culture of belonging, address our past inequities, provide opportunities for all, treat everyone with respect and dignity, and recognize every voice; and
WHEREAS, on February 2, 2021 the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution that affirmed that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and should be able to live in Mecklenburg County without fear; and
WHEREAS, the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners specifically encouraged local municipalities to adopt non-discrimination policies and procedures; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Davidson will not discriminate against any human being in employment practices or taxpayer-funded programs; we will not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin or ancestry, citizen or non-citizen, marital status, familial status, pregnancy, natural hair or hairstyles, military and veteran status, religious belief or non-belief, age, or handicap or disability of any person; and
WHEREAS, Davidson College and several local businesses have already adopted non- discrimination policies, we encourage others to do the same; and
WHEREAS, in the Town of Davidson, discrimination will not be tolerated in areas of public accommodations which include places such as our public spaces, restaurants, retail establishments, government buildings, etc.; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and Board of Commissioners previously directed the Town’s Affordable Housing and Equity Director to work with the Affordable Housing and Equity Board to develop a non-discrimination ordinance and their work continues. In the interim, we use this resolution to clearly state our support for every member of the Davidson community.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Town of Davidson Board of Commissioners call upon our community members to treat all persons with respect and dignity.
