NYTimes #1 Best Selling Author Clint Smith’s Summer Reading List

by | Jun 15, 2021

Monday night’s event was co-sponsored by Main Street Books and Davidson College.

There were so many highlights of the Zoom discussion with best-selling author Clint Smith (Davidson College class of 2010), but one of the most unexpected came during the question and answer session. Moderator Beth Helfrich of Main Street Books asked Smith what was on his Summer Reading List.

Dubbed #readlikeClint – this is the photo Main Street Books shared on social media.

And with that, Smith literally reached over his shoulder and started pulling books off his shelf to recommend.

Tuesday morning, Main Street Books shared the list spontaneously created by Smith: (pictured in the MSB photo) The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw, Whereabouts by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green, Evicted by Mathew Desmond, Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, Interpreter of Maladies by, Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. (Note, Main Street Books gave front billing to Clint Smith’s #1 best seller How the Word is Passed – although he didn’t mention his own book by name.)

Not pictured but also named: Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, Douglass by David W. Blight, Halfway Home by Reuben Jonathan Miller, Somebody’s Daughter by Ashley C. Ford, and Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe.
