Child Injured in Firearm Incident

Davidson Police responded to reports of gunfire on Thursday morning.
Thursday morning, Davidson Police Officers responded to a residence in the 18000 block of River Falls Drive because a 5-year-old child was injured by gunfire. The investigation found the child successfully manipulated a locked gun case and the weapon discharged, accidentally striking the child after traveling through the safe wall. The injuries are not life threatening and the child was transported to the hospital for immediate care due to the gunshot wound.
The investigation concluded there was no criminal violation committed. “We are very fortunate the injury was not life threatening,” said Police Chief Penny Dunn. “The incident serves as a reminder that young children can be curious, quick, and very determined in their efforts to access dangerous items in the home.” The best gun safety when children are in a home with firearms is to secure the weapon unloaded, in a locked case, and out of reach of children in a secure room.
