News from the Davidson College Center for Civic Engagement

Davidson College students have always been part of the Davidson Community. The Center for Civic Engagement coordinates many of those opportunities. (Bill Giduz photo)

As we approach the start of the fall semester, we are excited to reconnect with you and we’ve outlined some ideas for doing so below.

Our plan is to begin offering some programs on campus again, as well as to support students who are interested in leaving campus for internship and volunteer opportunities. Health and safety will continue to be our top priority and we know you have the same goals. You’ll see more about our current guidelines below and we appreciate your partnership in reinforcing these procedures.

If there is an opportunity to work with you (whether in-person, remotely or both), we do hope you’ll let us know. We are inspired by each of you more than ever. Thank you for continuing to be a part of all the positive things happening in our communities!

Community Engagement Mixer (formerly Community Involvement Fair) – Monday, August 30th from 3-4:30pm in the Davidson College Union

The Mixer is a time for nonprofits and community leaders to reconnect with Davidson students, faculty, and staff members. At the Mixer, you will be able to share information about your organization and the variety of opportunities you offer related to social change issues. Registration is open now at https://wildcatsync.davidson.edu/submitter/form/start/491728 and more information is provided there also. Join us to find your next volunteers and interns!

Find a Good Fit! Post Your Opportunities

The form is always open! If you’d like included in the booklet we share with students at the beginning of each semester, please submit your opportunities by August 20th.

If you have any projects, ongoing internships, or service opportunities, please share them with us! The center publicizes opportunities ranging from introductory service experiences to immersive summer internship programs. We also partner with faculty who incorporate community-based projects into their courses or research. The center is yourone stop shop to communicate opportunities at your organization.

Davidson College Academic Calendar: The first day of fall classes is August 23rd and the last day of classes for the semester is November 23rd (followed by an exam period). Students return to campus for fall classes beginning on January 20th and the last day of spring classes is April 27th.

Shared Responsibility for Health & Safety (update)

As we welcome our students to campus for the fall 2021 semester, health and safety will continue to be our foundational priority as we underscore our shared responsibility to keep our community safe.

We plan to allow off-campus internships and volunteering while clearly communicating our COVIDhealth and safety guidelines.  Our guidelines may and likely will change given evolving CDC and state health official guidance.

Currently, regardless of vaccination status, we are asking our students to mask in indoor public spaces.  Unvaccinated individuals are required to wear masks indoors. Vaccination will be required for students, staff and faculty members who participate in activities that present a high risk for transmission. If your organization has additional health and safety protocols/requirements for volunteers/interns, please share those when posting your opportunities with us and communicate those with any volunteers/interns that you select.

We will share an additional updates with you prior to the start of the semester.  In the meantime, please feel free to start posting your in-person and remote opportunities with us.

Save the Date: Community Innovation Institute

January 19, 2022, on the Davidson College Campus

This daylong event with speakers and breakout sessions is designed to advance community change and promote collaboration. Workshops and discussions will focus on place-based community change, transformational partnership development and innovative change strategies. We’ll provide more details when we open registration later this fall, but we hope you’ll mark your calendars now!

Stay Tuned for…

  • Workshop Series – We plan to return to offering at least two workshops each semester to provide professional development opportunities at no cost to our community and campus partners.
  • GivePulse – We mentioned this last year and we’re finally building the site! If you already use the tool, we’d love to be added as an affiliate. If you’re unfamiliar, we’ll offer trainings on how this (free to you!) tool can be used for volunteer recruitment.
  • Meetings/ Site Visits – Another summer has passed without an opportunity for us to hold our roundtables in the office or to visit you for a tour and to discuss possible partnerships. We’re going to hold time for that this fall and will reach out to see if you’d like us to visit you (or at least to chat on the phone)!
