Davidson Community Players continues its productions following the shutdown due to Covid by commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with performances of Anne Nelson’s The Guys at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson from September 9 -12.

Less than two weeks after 9/11, New Yorkers are still in shock. Joan, a New York writer, receives an unexpected phone call on behalf of Nick, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He’s looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services. Nick and Joan spend an afternoon together, recalling the fallen men through Nick’s painful memories fashioning his stories into memorials of words. In the process, Nick and Joan discover the possibilities of friendship in each other and their shared love for the unconquerable spirit of the city. As they make their way through the grief, they draw on humor, tango, the appreciation of craft in all its forms—and the enduring bonds of common humanity. Based on a true story.

The Guys is a powerful play that gives voice to the pain and disruption across the country in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks,” said DCP’s Executive Director Matt Merrell.  “With humor and grace, the playwright paints a moving and intimate portrait of a city’s — and nation’s — grief.”

All performances are indoors at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson. Advanced tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for students. Tickets can be purchased at DavidsonCommunityPlayers.org or by calling the box office at 704-892-7953. First responders are encouraged to attend FREE by calling the box office directly. A portion of the proceeds will be used to support local firefighters.
