Town Honors Former Davidson Fire Chief Gurley

Gurley served as the Fire Chief from 1974-96.

 

Mayor Rusty Knox read the following proclamation honoring the late Robert W. “Bob” Gurley at the Town Board Meeting on Tuesday, September 28. All three of Gurley’s children were able to attend the virtual meeting to hear the proclamation and talk about their father. 

PROCLAMATION

Honoring Robert W. Gurley

WHEREAS, the late Robert W. Gurley was born on April 18, 1934, in Davidson to the late Calvin Hartsell Gurley and Ethel Baker Gurley; and

WHEREAS, Gurley was the father to daughter Kay and sons Mark and Michael; and

WHEREAS, He loved to work and was self-employed as an electrician until 2017 and was known for being a fine craftsman of his trade; and

WHEREAS, He was known to many as a solid man who would do anything for anyone in need; and

WHEREAS, He had a strong connection to everyone that he met and was a jovial person who enjoyed being around people; and

WHEREAS, Gurley was a lover of sports and enjoyed playing golf while also being an avid supporter of West Rowan High School Basketball, the New York Yankees, Duke Blue Devils, and the Dallas Cowboys; and

WHEREAS, He was also a dedicated member of the Davidson Fire Department for 34 years and spent his time of service training, educating, and caring for the personnel under his command while also being a dedicated servant to the Town of Davidson and town residents; and

WHEREAS, Gurley served as the Davidson Fire Chief from 1974 – 1996 for a total of 26 years and oversaw many progressive changes for the department; and

WHEREAS, His servant heart and leadership were known to many and his dedication to the Town of Davidson and the Davidson Fire Department are unmatched.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Rusty Knox, and the Town of Davidson Board of Commissioners recognize Robert W. Gurley as lifelong member of the Davidson community and his years of service and leadership to the Town of Davidson and the Davidson Fire Department.
