Can Davidson Help Afghan Refugee Families?

Members of the Davidson community, including several houses of worship, the college, and our community nonprofits have begun exploring the possibility that our Town could welcome several Afghan refugee families.

This group of people strongly believes that Davidson would be an excellent location for several families – specifically that welcoming more than one family to our community would be the ideal situation.

The biggest obstacle to overcome is housing. It should come as no surprise that housing is at a premium, and affordable housing is incredibly scarce.

The group realizes that it might not be feasible to ask for people to donate housing at no charge, but even an affordable rate would be better than a market rate. Members of this group also believe that there are a number of volunteers who would be willing to do minor repairs or restoration if the property is not currently ready for occupancy. The expectation is that the housing would need to be available for at least a six-month period.

If you or anyone you know has a house, apartment, or combination thereof that could be made available to host a family, please contact Carmen Germino or Robert Alexander at: [email protected] or [email protected] .

Lastly, this group wants to assure any potential property owners who could offer any housing that this group will remain involved with our Afghan allies – helping with all manner of their daily integration in the Davidson community.
