This Week at DFM: October 16

by | Oct 14, 2021

And you can make pies with some of those apples.

Hello DFM Shoppers,

You’ve heard, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but did you also hear that “a pound of apples supports the Davidson Farmers Market?” It doesn’t sound as catchy, but its a fact! Every year, DFM holds an apple sale during the fall. We partner with a DFM vendor and source apples from a N.C. orchard to give our shoppers access to locally grown apples. We support another small business (one that regularly couldn’t attend DFM) while raising needed funds to keep DFM operating and growing.

As a nonprofit, we’re always actively raising funds, but DFM’s apples sales has grown to become our signature fundraiser of the year! DFM will have apples available every Saturday until Thanksgiving. Purchasing a pound (or more) of apples not only supports a N.C. small business but also supports the work and mission of DFM.

Apples available this week are:

  • Stayman Apples – best for baking in pies or cooking for sauces and apple butter. Stayman apples are sweet but slightly tart and keep well in the refrigerator;
  • Cortland Apples – terrific baking apples, these juicy and slightly tart apples are great for pies, cobblers, and crisps. Use raw, sliced in salads or on cheese plates;
  • King Luscious Apples – popular as an eating apple, King Luscious are also great for baking (ideally apple butter or pies.) They are the apples that Martha Stewart endorsed as “the apple for pie.”

This year shoppers can select pre-bagged apples or pick their own. Each Saturday is a limited amount, so make sure you arrive early to shop your favorite types of apples! Cash and credit card payments accepted.

Happy Eating,
Justin
