Wildcat Volleyball Hosts Two A-10 Opponents This Weekend

Davidson Volleyball hosts conference play this weekend at Belk Arena.

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. — After facing off on the road earlier this season, the Davidson volleyball team will have home court advantage against the Duquesne Dukes and Dayton Flyers this weekend. The ‘Cats will take on the Dukes on Friday night at 7 p.m. from inside Belk Arena, before hosting the Flyers on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Series History

  • The Wildcats will look to defeat Dayton for the first time in program history on Sunday, as the Flyers hold the all-time series at an 12-0 advantage. 
  • Davidson has taken just one set from the Flyers, since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2014-15.
  • Against the Dukes, the ‘Cats are 3-8 all-time but have won three of the last five meetings against Duquesne.
  • Last time out against Duquesne, the Wildcats fell 3-1 in Pittsburgh but pushed all four sets to the brink.
  • With an 9-9 overall record this season, and 5-3 conference ledger, the ‘Cats are looking to go back on a win streak after defeating Saint Louis last weekend for just the third time in program history. 

Around the Horn

  • With eight games remaining in the regular season, the ‘Cats currently sit in fourth place among the A-10 standings.
  • Dayton, the league’s preseason favorite, sits alone at the top at 9-0, while the Dukes are just behind the Wildcats in fifth place with a 4-5 conference slate.
  • Across the conference, Davidson ranks at the top in digs per set (17.43) while Dayton and Duquesne rank No. 1 and 2 in opponent digs/set (Dayton – 13.68/set, Duquesne – 13.87/set).

Death. Taxes. Bella Brady’s Defense

  • Sophomore Bella Brady’s stellar defense has been undeniable this season, as the Florida native has 391 digs and averages 5.67 digs per set.
  • Nationally, Brady ranks 11th across Division I volleyball in total digs and sixth in digs per, set while both numbers also lead the Atlantic 10 Conference.
  • This season, Brady has been named the A-10’s Defensive Player of the Week five times, setting a new program-record for weekly A-10 honors.

Hat Tip

  • Brady hasn’t been the only Wildcat to catch the league’s eye this season, as Anela Davis, Isabel Decker and Hattie Rodriguez have each captured their own A-10 weekly honors.
  • Davis earned her first career A-10 Player of the Week nod last week, after leading the Wildcats to a thrilling 3-1 victory over SLU. In the win, the junior middle blocker was a force at the net recording 11 kills on 22 swings (.500 attacking percentage) and provided the ‘Cats a total of 17.5 points. With a match-high eight blocks, Davis provided seven blocks assists and one solo block, while averaging 2.00 per set to shut down the Billikens’ offense.
  • Decker tabbed her second Rookie of the Week honor last week as well, as she recorded the match-high 15 kills against the Billikens. This season, the rookie has seven double-doubles, including a career-high 22 kills at Duquesne and a season-best 17 digs against Saint Louis.
  • Senior outside hitter Rodriguez also started off the season with an A-10 Player of the Week nod as she averages 3.33 kills per set, good for fifth among the A-10, and a team-best 210 kills.
