“I don’t want to let her down,” reflects Shawn Thompson, one of the residents of Davidson Housing Coalition’s Mock Road duplexes. Shawn is referring to Candi Phelps who serves as property manager for many of DHC’s affordable rental units. Candi helped to secure DHC housing for Shawn nearly two years ago. Candi continues to play a supportive role in Shawn’s life, including guidance in his current search for employment.

Shawn is actively looking for work. He describes himself as a “people person” with skills in customer service. “I like interacting with customers, helping with questions and concerns, bringing a smile to their faces.”

A Charlotte native and graduate of Myers Park High School, Shawn served three years in the military as a communications specialist. As a veteran, he fell upon hard times and lived out of his car for seven months before being connected by a veterans’ program in Charlotte to DHC. “At first, I thought Davidson would be too far from Charlotte for me. But it’s actually so peaceful and quiet here. I live in a beautiful unit. I am so grateful! Without DHC, well, I know where I’d be – back in my car.”
