Davidson Cheer Earns Top 5 Spot at Nationals
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson Wildcat spirit program competed and placed Top 5 in the nation over the weekend at the UCA & UDA Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship, hosted at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. Their score of overall score of 90.40/100 in semi-finals 89.03 in their finals routine earned them fifth place in the Small CoEd Game Day Cheer division.
“I am so proud,” Head Coach Kaylee Smith said. “This is the super bowl of college cheerleading. There is no bigger stage to compete on at the collegiate level. These athletes have grown so much and have truly learned the competitive aspect to their sport. We made significant changes on Thursday, less than 24 hours prior to Semi-Finals, and still competed two perfect, zero deduction routine. These athletes are hungry for more and I am excited to see the direction this program is moving in.”
Davidson was one of 19 programs to qualify for semi-finals and one of 10 to advance to finals. The team is scored on four different aspects: situational sideline chant (30 points), fight song (30 points), a timeout routine (30 points) and a separate overall score (10 points) for a total out of 100 points. Davidson performed a zero deduction routine in semi-finals before heading into finals. The University of Delaware took the top spot at the competition.
