Men’s Tennis Tops Gardner-Webb in Home Opener

Men’s Tennis celebrates the final doubles win over Gardner Webb.

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcats produced a 4-2 result against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon, picking up their first win of the season in their home opener.

“This is a great win for the guys,” said Head Coach Drew Barrett. “We were a man down and the guys stepped up big. I’m really proud of their effort and fight today.”

The ‘Cats started the day off strong, securing the doubles point with victories at #1 and #2. As Davidson’s top duo, Udday Singh and Alejandro Solares pulled out a 6-4 victory from court one, while rookies Nico Pinzon and Juan Camilo Perez Gongora earned a 6-3 win on court two.

Doubling as the Wildcats’ top singles player, Solares also picked up a three-set singles win over Gardner-Webb’s Chrisjan Van Wyk. The Guatemala native won a strong first set, 6-2, before falling behind 3-6 in the second. Down to the wire, the sophomore secured the victory with a 7-5 decision in the third.

With wins from Singh and Brooks Green, the ‘Cats were able to clinch the home opening victory. Singh picked up a two-set, 6-4, 6-2 win on court three, while Green came up clutch with a 6-4, 7-5 win at #5.

Davidson will look to continue its winning ways next weekend, when the ‘Cats take on St. Bonaventure and Virginia Tech in a doubleheader in Blacksburg.
