Town Board Honors Coach Bob McKillop
Tuesday night the Town Board honored Davidson head basketball coach Bob McKillop with a proclamation recognizing his recent career milestone 1,000 games as the Wildcats’ coach. Most importantly, the Board noted that McKillop’s impact is felt throughout the Davidson community – not just on the court that bears his name.
Honoring Davidson College Men’s Basketball Coach Bob McKillop
WHEREAS, On January 29 the Davidson College Men’s Basketball game vs. LaSalle marked Coach Bob McKillop’s 1,000th game as the Wildcats’ Head Coach; and

WHEREAS, Bob McKillop first came to Davidson College in 1978 serving as an assistant coach for the ’78-’79 season. Ten years later, after coaching and teaching at Long Island Lutheran High School, he returned to Davidson with his family having been named the Head Coach; and
WHEREAS, In the 32 years since Bob McKillop became the Wildcats’ Head Coach there have been 7 U.S. Presidents, 5 Davidson College Presidents, and 4 Mayors of Davidson; and
WHEREAS, Coach McKillop’s 1,000th game at the same institution put him onto a short and distinguished list that includes Mike Krzyewski, Jim Boeheim, Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp, E.A. Diddle, Ray Meyer, Don Haskins, Tom Izzo, and Greg Kamp; and
WHEREAS, Coach McKillop has single-handedly served as the college and town’s unofficial international “Ambassador at Large.” Over the past 30+ years he has recruited more than 40 international players from more than two dozen countries around the globe; and
WHEREAS, His leadership is evident on and off the court. Coach McKillop has endeavored to teach them more than basketball. He organized trips for his teams as allowed by the NCAA every four years. The last such trip (pre-COVID) included a tour of Auschwitz; and
WHEREAS, Trust, Commitment, and Care (TCC) is what Coach McKillop instills in the scholar-athletes on his teams; and
WHEREAS, The role that he plays in the lives of his former players is indicative of their admiration of him, from attending weddings to sitting courtside when a certain former player became the NBA’s all-time leading 3-point scorer. He continues to serve as a mentor and role model to his players even after they leave Davidson.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Rusty Knox and the Board of Commissioners of the Town of Davidson, do hereby honor Head Coach Bob McKillop for everything that he has done and continues to do for the larger Davidson community.
Proclaimed this 8th day of February 2022.
