DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women’s basketball team picked up a huge 76-67 victory over third place Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon, as four Wildcats scored in double-figures for the fourth time this season.

Doubling as Senior Day inside Belk Arena, the ‘Cats gutted out their fifth Atlantic 10 victory after shooting 45.3 percent from the field and handed the Minutewomen just their fourth loss in league play.

The Wildcats shot the lights out in the first quarter, draining six of their first seven 3-point attempts, from five different ‘Cats, to jump out to an explosive 20-6 lead by the 2:21 mark and 20-9 by the end of the first.

After leading 35-25 at the half, thanks to a 3-pointer from Chloe Welch on Davidson’s final possession, the Minutewomen began to fight back, making it a one-possession game on four occasions over the final 20 minutes of play.

Threatening Davidson’s lead, UMass opened up the final half on a 7-0 run before Welch’s third trey of the day stopped the surge. After a made free-throw from UMass’ Destiny Philoxy, the Minutewomen cut their deficit down to just three, but a jumper from Elle Sutphin before the third quarter media timeout helped the ‘Cats hold onto a five-point lead, 44-39.

UMass would keep the deficit at three, this time 45-42, before senior Cassidy Gould hit a deep three on the far side while Sarah Konstans and Sallie Schutz made four straight at the free throw line. Thanks to the makes, the ‘Cats extended their lead back up to double-digits, 55-44, with two minutes to play in the third.

As UMass’ Philoxy closed out the third period with six straight points, the Minutewomen carried that momentum into the fourth with four more points to cap off a 10-0 run and make it a 57-54 game. From there, Konstans and Gould sunk back-to-back putbacks, while junior Peyton Carter got in on the scoring to keep Davidson’s lead above five points.

With the Minutewomen still within striking distance, 65-60, and five minutes remaining, rookie Issy Morgan hit a stepback 3-pointer that put Davidson’s advantage back to eight points and secured the lead for good. UMass would come within five one more time in the final minute of play, but 8-of-9 makes at the free throw line ultimately sealed the deal for the Wildcats.

Welch (16), Morgan (15), Sutphin (13) and Suzi-Rose Deegan (10) all scored in double-figures for the Wildcats, while Gould ended the day with nine points, nine rebounds and five assists. Konstans finished with six points, five rebounds and a 4-4 effort at the line.

Davidson finished the day shooting 10-24 from beyond the arc, after the 6-7 start, and ended up tied with UMass on the glass, 36-36.
