by | Feb 24, 2022

Wednesday night’s game was the final home game for seniors Cassidy Gould and Sarah Konstans.

DAVIDSON — Chloe Welch scored 13 points, and Suzi-Rose Deegan added 11 as the Davidson Wildcats overcame an eight-point first-half deficit to defeat George Washington 51-46 in women’s basketball in Belk Arena Wednesday night.

It’s the second straight win for the Wildcats, who improved to 15-12 overall and 6-9 in the Atlantic 10 and won their final regular season home game.

Welch scored eight of her points after the intermission, including two on a feed from Sarah Konstans to give the Wildcats their first lead of the night, 30-28, at the 7:19 mark of the third quarter. Davidson never trailed again and pulled ahead for good on Issy Morgan free throws with 57 seconds left in the third.

A layup by Welch made it 48-39 with 5:57 to play, giving the Wildcats their largest lead of the evening, and free throws by Welch and Adelaide Fullerhelped close the door in the final moments.

George Washington’s lead peaked at eight points in the first half, but the Wildcats got seven straight points from Deegan — via a driving layup, a three and another layup — to pull within one, before the Colonials added a free throw to lead 28-26 after 20 minutes.

Cameron Tabor scored all nine of points in the first quarter, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, to keep the Wildcats in it, and Sarah Konstans led the way with 10 rebounds.

Mayowa Taiwa led the Colonials with 15 points.
