DavidsonLearns Presents David J. Cranford, PhD on Archaeology in the Carolinas

by | Mar 8, 2022

People have lived in the Carolinas for over 12,000 years, but for most of that period, there is no written record of their history and culture. We rely on archaeology to learn about the indigenous people who lived here, as well as the Europeans who largely displaced them. North Carolina’s Office of State Archaeology identifies archaeological resources on land and beneath State waters, and preserves our legacy of Native American villages, colonial towns, farmsteads, and historic shipwrecks.

David Cranford is an Assistant State Archaeologist with responsibility for counties in the southern Piedmont, including Mecklenburg. He will speak to us about the work of the Office of State Archaeology, and his own experiences investigating, documenting and preserving settlements of the Catawba people in our region.
