Regular Season Champs! Top-Seeded Men’s Basketball Begins Tourney Play Friday

Wildcat fans have a lot to cheer about with the ‘Cats clinching the A-10 season top seed.

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson returns to the site of its only Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship, when the top-seeded Wildcats begin postseason play Friday, March 11 at 12 p.m. against the winner of No. 8 Fordham / No. 9 George Mason at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

For the ‘Cats, it’s their 15th Regular Season Crown (13 – SoCon / 2 A-10) under Head Coach Bob McKillop and 25th in School History.

Davidson, which enters with a record of 25-5 overall, won the A-10 Tournament in 2018, the last time the event was held in our Nation’s Capital.

Since joining the A-10 in 2014-15, the Wildcats have won two regular season titles (2015, 2022), a tournament title (2018) and totaled 91 league wins (11.3 per year), while recording an average finish of 4.0 in the 14-team conference and making the tournament semifinals each year.

Along with setting a new program record for A-10 wins in a single-season going 15-3, the Wildcats have clinched a double bye for the fifth time in eight years.

In all, Davidson has won 13 conference tournaments, including eight under McKillop.

Regular Season Champion Davidson Will Be Top Seed for A-10 Men’s Basketball Championship

Dayton, VCU, St. Bonaventure also Earn Byes Into Quarterfinals 

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Davidson, which won the Atlantic 10 regular season title with a 15-3 conference record, will be the No. 1 seed for next week’s A-10 Men’s Basketball Championship at Capital One Arena in Washington. The 14-team tournament begins Wednesday with the championship final set for Sunday, March 13.

ESPN+ will air Wednesday’s first-round games while USA Network will carry the entire second round Thursday and all four quarterfinal matchups Friday. CBS Sports Network will air the semifinals Saturday at 1:00 and 3:30 pm. The championship final is set for 1:00 pm on CBS Sports as part of their annual Selection Sunday coverage.

The Wildcats receive one of four double byes into the quarterfinals. In addition to Davidson, second-seeded Dayton, (14-4), No. 3 VCU (14-4) and No. 4 St. Bonaventure (12-5) earned the double byes. Davidson plays at noon on Friday, followed by St. Bonaventure at 2:30 pm. Dayton opens the evening session at 6:00 pm and VCU will play in the last quarterfinal at 8:30 pm. Dayton wins the tiebreaker for the second seed with VCU courtesy of the Flyers’ Saturday win over Davidson.

Seeds five through 10 earn byes into the second round and will play Thursday on USA Network. Saint Louis (12-6) is seeded fifth and will play the winner of No. 12 La Salle (5-13) and No. 13 Saint Joseph’s (5-13) at 2:30 pm Thursday. The Explorers and Hawks will meet Wednesday in the first round at 1:00 pm on ESPN+. La Salle earned the 12 seed over Saint Joseph’s by virtue of their head-to-head results during the regular season.

No. 6 Richmond (10-8) will open play Thursday at 8:30 pm against the winner of the late first-round game between No. 11 Rhode Island (5-12) and No. 14 Duquesne (1-16). The game between Rhody and the Dukes will tip off at 3:30 pm on Wednesday on ESPN+.

Seventh-seeded George Washington (8-9) will play 10-seeded Massachusetts (7-11) at 6:00 pm on Thursday in the second round, with the winner playing No. 2 Dayton. No. 8 Fordham (8-10) faces No. 9 George Mason (7-9) at noon on Thursday for the right to play Davidson in the quarterfinals.

The winner of the Atlantic 10 Championship will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
