Vote for the JM Alexander team!

JM Alexander Middle School Future City Team Wins First in NC Regional Competition and Advances to International Finals Competing for the People’s Choice Award

There is a group of local middle school students who are using their imaginations in exciting and creative ways.

This is their biosphere ecoscraper.

After placing first in the North Carolina Future City regional competition in January, JM Alexander IB Middle School is currently one of 41 teams from around the United States and the world competing in the 2022 Future City Competition.

Future City is an engineering competition in which participants imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future that answer a question: How can we make the world a better place? Students produce four deliverables:  an essay; a scale model built from recycled materials; a project plan, and a presentation video. They also participate in a Q&A session with judges, all of whom are professional engineers. This year’s theme is a Waste-Free City Using the Principles of a Circular Economy.

The 8th grade Future City team at JM Alexander created “Terra Limpa, Mozambique”, a waste-free, sustainable, nature centered city. Terra Limpa features innovative solutions like agro-voltaic islands, themed complete neighborhoods with “ecoscrapers” surrounding food producing biospheres, machine learning auto-sort system, biobricks and MOW boats that harvest plastic ocean waste from previous generations.  Mushroom and kelp packaging and pneumatic tube delivery system ensures zero waste. The city has a vibrant culture, coral reefs left for SCUBA diving, and a world-class university, and competitive sports teams.

This year’s international final (taking place virtually), is the culmination of three years’ of work for the JMA 8th graders.  They have been collaborating since 6th grade and have grown tremendously.  This year the diverse team of scholars met before and after school as well as the weekends over many months to plan, build, and dream.  They were supported throughout by mentors from North Mecklenburg high school (all former Future City competitors), their coaches, teachers Leslie Cosentine and Lindsey Pavlovic, and their parents.

As a part of the international finals, Terra Limpa team is competing for the People’s Choice Award. They would love to have your support as they represent NC in this competition.
