Golf’s Heffner Shines on Final Day of Seahawk Intercollegiate
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Behind a final round 68, Davidson’s Alex Heffner climbed eight spots up the leaderboard to finish tied for third at the 2022 UNCW Seahawk Intercollegiate Monday afternoon.
The two-day/54-hole event was played on the Par 72, 6960-yard Country Club of Landfall Nicklaus layout.
A sophomore from Harrisburg, N.C., Heffner began the day tied for 11th at one-under following rounds of 73 and 70 yesterday. He started his final round four under through eighth holes highlighted by three straight birdies. After making the turn in 33, he played the course’s front nine in one-under to sign for his lowest round of the spring and finish just three off the pace.
Will Davis, who was competing as an individual for the Wildcats, was solid for the third straight round with 72 to post a 54-hole total of 217 (+1) and personal-best showing of tied for 13th.
The host Seahawks (-11) led wire-to-wire capturing the team title by 13 swings over VCU (+2).
Wright State’s Tyler Goecke (-8) rallied from a stroke down to edge Mitchell Vance (-6) of Francis Marion and win the individual crown.
Clayton Tribus (225/T-43), Viraj Garewal (228/T-53), Ethan Hall (234/T-65) and Brian Garrett (245/78) were also in Davidson’s starting lineup.
As a team, the Wildcats signed for a 292 to conclude the annual event in 898.
