“Now What?” A Poem For Holy Thursday
Peter’s thoughts as Jesus tries to wash his feet
John 13: 1-17
Wanting me to be a rock-
what is this pebble-like
gesture of humility?
Surprise is his nature
but this is too much
If his desire was to be a slave
home he should have
stayed
Forbid him I will
None of this is for me
His shame drips like
so much water in
a bowl of undoing
My plan is not working-
His plan nothing but
mystery
He stares right through me
My stony heart
crumbles from the weight
of his heavy love
How can I breathe underneath
the drowning waters
that bathe my feet
but soak by
soul?
He wins again as always
Strange is the kingdom
he offers to so many
My vision was so different
when I left those nets
Now I am caught in
a web of wonder
What will he do next
as we go to the city we call
holy?
