“Death Hung in the Air” A Poem for Easter
Death hung heavy in
the air
waiting like a bride
for her groom
But there would be no
bringing together
this day
No, this would be a
day of separation-
a divine unbinding-
A wedge was now
driven between
was never to be
parted
Darkness was his companion
for three days
while all Creation held
its breath
wondering what was
to be the meaning
of this pause
He stepped into the light
and picked death
from the air like
a child plucking an
apple from a tree
and he smiled
Being the child he was of
a proud father
he raised his nail scarred
hands to the sun
and breathed deeply
fresh new life
It would be called “Resurrection”
but for now it was
the first day of a
new beginning
for him and
for you
